The mechanics of the inner ear

Georg von Békésy used cochleas from human cadavers and several animal models to understand how the ear detects sound. Using the inner ears of animals from guinea pigs to an elephant that died in Budapest zoo, he could observe waves travelling through the cochlea and that the pitch affects where the waves are formed. Despite their difference in size, both guinea pigs and elephants have similar hearing ranges and inner ear structures to humans.
