"Animal research and testing has played a part in almost every medical breakthrough of the last century. It has saved hundreds of millions of lives worldwide..."

The Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 requires the Home Office to publish annualy to Parliament, a report of the use of protected animals in science research.

The press release from the Home Office on 24th July 2006 included a comment by the then Home Office Minister Joan Ryan:

"Today's report is another example of our commitment to openess and transparency in the vital field of animal research. The UK has a reputation for producing high quality, well-regarded research and I welcome the fact that this is being carried out under some of the highest standards of welfare and accomodation in the world.

Animal research and testing has played a part in almost every medical breakthrough of the last century. It has saved hundreds of millions of lives worldwide, and is vital to our NHS.  Where animal research is the only option, we will continue to ensure that the balance between animal welfare and scientific advancement is maintained."
