Bendroflumethiazide - a diuretic

On WHO Model List of Essential Medicines : NO

Alternative names: bendrofluazide, Aprinox

Bendroflumethiazide is a thiazide diuretic. It works by helping the kidneys eliminate fluid from the body. It may also be used to treat high blood pressure or for other conditions as determined by your doctor. However, exactly how bendroflumethiazide works to treat high blood pressure is unknown.

Bendroflumethiazide works by inhibiting sodium reabsorption at the beginning of distal convoluted tubules – the primary site for the kidney’s hormone based regulation of calcium and the regulation of potassium, sodium and pH. By doing so, it causes more sodium to reach the collecting ducts – the part of the kidneys that participates in electrolyte and fluid balance – and as a result water is lost.

The main use of Bendroflumethiazide is currently hypertension (part of the effect is due to vasodilatation).
