"...to continue to be one of the world centres for scientific research, we have to stand up and be counted in support of researchers, go on marches and demonstrations, and back even tougher action by the police and the courts against these terrorists."

Jack Straw is the former Home Secretary.  Whilst in the post he had the responsibility of licencing and inspecting establishments carrying out experiments on animals.

In a column for the Bolton News on 2nd March 2006 he talks about standing up for animal rights.  This followed problems in Oxford over their new animal testing facility the previous week. The article takes a positive view of animal testing, he says:

"If we want the best drugs to be available in the UK, and to continue to be one of the world centres for scientific research, we have to stand up and be counted in support of researchers, go on marches and demonstrations, and back even tougher action by the police and the courts against these terrorists.  The quicker we can have them locked up the better"
