"Animal research has lead to advances in the treatment of many conditions... Where there is no alternative available, we will continue to ensure that the balance between animal welfare and scientific advancement is maintained."

In 2005 the Home Office released a document with the animal statistics for 2004.  In the press release, Home Office Minister Andy Burnham said:

"Today's report is another example of our commitment to openness and transparency in the vital field of animal research. I am proud that the UK scientific community continues to carry out high quality research under standards of care and accomodation that are amongst the highest in the world.

Regulations ensure that work carried out is for the benefit of people, animals and the environment, and we are committed to funding research into the '3rs' - reduction, replacement and refinement - through the National Centre set up in 2004.  The number of animal procedures has halved since the 1970s and scientific advancement is maintained."

Animal research has lead to advances in the treatment of many conditions such as asthma, peptic ulcers, schizophrenia and depression, polio, kidned disease and Parkinson's.  Where there is no alternative available, we will continue to ensure that the balance between animal welfare and scientific advancement is maintained."
