Professor Keith Mansford has a history of working for medical companies such as Proteome Sciences and SmithKline Beecham PLC.  His consultancy practice, Mansford Associates, advises a range of international biotechnology an pharmaceutical companies.

He is quoted as saying:

"A further example of the pivotal use of animal testing into discovery and development of the currently used antibiotics is in calculating the dosage regime required in seriously ill patients. It has not been possible to explore adequately the complex series of interactions solely in in-vitro systems... carefully controlled and planned animal experiments have made a vital contribution to the discovery and utility of the well-known classes of antibiotics for treating both human and animal infections"
