"genetically normal and GM animals [have] contributed significantly to biomedical understanding

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics

The Ethics of Research involving Animals - 25th May 2005

Quote:
“research and testing involving both genetically normal and GM animals has proved relevant to humans and, in combination with other methods such as in vitro and clinical studies, has contributed significantly to biomedical understanding.”

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics identifies, examines and reports on the ethical questions raised by recent advances in biological and medical research. It is funded jointly by The Nuffield Foundation, the Medical Research Council and The Wellcome Trust.

The aim of the report is to clarify the debate surrounding research involving animals and to help people think through the ethical issues that are raised. It makes recommendations for future policy and practice, including the use of GM animals, improving the quality of debate, implementation of the Three Rs and the responsibilities of various groups involved.
