The physiology of digestion

Pavlov’s experiments on the digestive systems of dogs provided the first true, detailed observations of how the digestive system worked. Central to his research was his surgical technique which allowed different sections of the digestive tract to be studied independently of each other. His technique allowed the dogs to live long, happy and healthy lives, with observations being made over an almost unlimited period. This gave true insight into the functioning of a healthy digestive system.

Among his findings, Pavolv described the physiology of the salivary glands, the stomach and the intestines in detail. He showed that the digestive tract is influenced by the central nervous system in a complex manner, and that psychological process can influence the nature of the fluids secreted into the digestive tract.
