"experiments on animals have contributed greatly to scientific advances"

House Of Lords Session – Select committee on animals in scientific procedures

Volume I 2001-02 - Wednesday 24th July 2002

Quote:
"On balance, we are convinced that experiments on animals have contributed greatly to scientific advances, both for human medicine and for animal health. Animal experimentation is a valuable research method which has proved itself over time... Toxicological testing in animals is at present essential for medical practice and the protection of consumers and the environment, as it often provides information that is not currently available from any other source.”

The House of Lords has a number of Committees appointed to investigate a particular subject. After each inquiry a report of the Committee’s findings is published along with the evidence on which it is based, and recommendations are made to the Government and others.

The Select Committee on Animals in Scientific Procedures falls under the umbrella of The Science and Technology Committee, one of the main investigative committees in the House of Lords.  The committee was appointed March 2001 and was formally dissolved upon the publication of its report on Wednesday 24th July 2002.
